Surá is the name of a Costa Rican tree that dates from the pre-Columbian era, and whose wood is one of the finest in the world. The members of the choir form the Surá tree. Each member represents one layer of wood; united together, the parts become a whole that is selected, cut, and fashioned by the director. The end result yields a harmonious sound and a beautiful form, as only the precious Surá wood could give. Therefore, the name Surá represents our roots, nature, and life itself. The name has an indigenous origin: Surá is a benevolent god in Bribri mythology (indigenous community from the Talamanca region). We have very proudly chosen an indigenous name as a means of sharing the message that we should appreciate and respect our past, present, and future. In the same way, we defend nature and oppose the irresponsible clearing of forests.
