Cahuita Town

Cahuita was created in the middle of the 18th century. Its inhabitants are English-speaking Afro-Caribbean; they sailed from Bocas del Toro (Panama) and from the coasts of Nicaragua. At the beginning, they settled in provisional fishing camps for only six months per year until the first family really settled in year 1828; then, in 1915, it happened that former President Alfredo Gonzalez Flores suffered a sailing accident in that area, and in order to show his gratefulness for having been so kindly rescued by its settlers, he bought a piece of land for them to erect a new village, the actual Cahuita.
